The striking structure is the creative vision of Bethesda, MD transplants Elliott Himelfarb (our newest board member) and spouse Janet Minker. The couple, both 57, “hung it up”, according to Elliott, and moved to Sarasota in 2008. “Hanging it up” to them is not exactly what most would consider a literal interpretation.
Janet still has clients with her art direction and graphic design business, Minker Design. (She’s agreed to help LSPOA redesign our website.) And Elliott, a corporate asset facilities manager in the Washington, DC area, went to work for D.N.D. Construction, the company that is building their new home. He’s supervising, of course. Are they both working? Yes, but, now in paradise and on their own schedules.
What is also working well is the modern, airy and angular house designed by Sarasota’s über-architect Jonathan Parks. Construction on the 4 bedroom, 3½ bath home began last July and should be completed this September. The elevated home (FEMA required) features a public space or module. The private living area is separated by a pool and accessed by a glass corridor or pool walkway. The open design lends ample privacy for Elliott’s office, Janet’s studio, guest accommodations, and an outdoor shower. Two large built-in planters create a more ground level appearance. “It’s not an easy lot to build on,” Elliott says. But he’s pleased with how it’s evolving. There’ll be lots of high efficiency windows, solar heat for water and pool, and photovoltaic panels for generating extra electricity. There’s a wonderful view of the Lido Shores sunset from the second floor and planned rooftop deck. Cocktails this fall, anyone?
